Dr. Haghighatjoo will discuss her own experiences as a member of Iran’s government, the outcome and aftermath of the recent election, and what the United States and other countries can and should do in the face of Iran’s nuclear development.

Dr. Fatemeh Haghighatjoo, an expert on Iran’s internal affairs and a leading advocate of human rights and democracy in Iran, was a member of Iran’s reformist parliament from 2000-2004. In 2001 Iran’s judiciary sentenced her to 10 months which she has not served— for her claims that the government had tortured prisoners. Dr. Haghighatjoo has held many academic positions at MIT, Harvard and Univeristy of Connecticut and is currently a visiting scholar at Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at University of Massachusetts Boston. She has been quoted and interviewed with international Media and TV on Iran’s domestic politics.
